Advanced Focus Season 1 S1 #1 - Ab geht's mit Präfixen!

[00:00.000]This is Advanced Focus Lesson 1.
[00:17.560]Willkommen!
[00:19.200]This is an alternative to the audio blogs we usually post for advanced students.
[00:23.360]The Advanced Focus Lessons are also intended for upper intermediate or advanced students.
[00:28.560]But in these we hope you understand an advanced part of German grammar or vocabulary usage.
[00:32.560]Der Großteil dieser Lektionen wird auf Deutsch sein.
[00:37.160]Most of this lesson will be in German.
[00:39.120]Also los!
[00:40.120]Was ist das Thema heute?
[00:43.120]Heute gucken wir uns die Vorsilbe ab an.
[00:46.840]The prefix ab is our topic today.
[00:49.640]But before we start, let me remind you that you can find a summary of everything
[00:53.520]we teach at GermanPod101.com.
[00:56.800]Just go to www.germanpod101.com, log in, and access the PDF for this lesson.
[01:04.880]Or go to the Learning Center, where you will also find useful exercises.
[01:08.480]Also die Vorsilbe ab.
[01:12.480]Das ist eine sich abspaltene Vorsilbe, oder?
[01:17.720]This prefix is one of those that split off, isn't it?
[01:21.560]Ja.
[01:22.560]Zum Beispiel abreisen bildet ich reise ab, du reist ab, und so weiter.
[01:29.080]Also was bedeutet diese Vorsilbe?
[01:32.840]Diese Vorsilbe hat zwei Bedeutungsfelder.
[01:35.320]Das erste ist eine Bewegung weg von hier.
[01:39.200]This syllable has two areas of meaning.
[01:42.320]The first is a movement away from here.
[01:45.040]Zum Beispiel abfliegen.
[01:47.720]To fly away.
[01:48.720]Oder abreisen.
[01:51.000]To travel away.
[01:52.440]Und was ist der Unterschied zwischen reisen und abreisen?
[01:58.080]Vielleicht hilft ein Beispielsatz.
[02:00.520]An example sentence.
[02:02.080]Ich reise morgen nach Istanbul.
[02:05.040]Oder, ich reise morgen ab.
[02:09.560]So when you use reisen here, the focus is on where you're traveling to.
[02:14.560]And when you're using abreisen, you can drop off the destination, and the focus
[02:18.840]is on the fact that you're leaving.
[02:20.880]Genau.
[02:22.760]Ein weiteres Beispiel für ab im Sinne von weg.
[02:26.480]Another example for ab implying an away motion is abschneiden.
[02:30.520]To cut off.
[02:31.520]Schneiden is just to cut, but abschneiden is to cut off.
[02:36.120]Oder abführen.
[02:38.120]To lead off or to lead away.
[02:40.640]Führen ist to lead, abführen is to lead somebody away, as the police might
[02:46.000]do.
[02:47.000]I think you said that ab has a second meaning though, didn't you?
[02:51.200]What is that?
[02:52.200]Ja, ab kann sich auch auf eine Fläche oder ein Objekt beziehen.
[02:58.200]Ab can relate to an area or an object.
[03:00.600]Zum Beispiel absuchen.
[03:02.240]Ich habe die ganze Stadt nach dir abgesucht.
[03:06.000]I looked for you all over the city.
[03:08.040]Suchen is just plain searching, but the ab in absuchen implies visiting every
[03:13.400]single location.
[03:14.400]I guess I'd say it's comparable to the path you take mowing a lawn.
[03:19.760]It's not enough to reach all corners or to reach six random spots in a lawn.
[03:24.120]You have to use a system to make sure that you mow every single patch of grass.
[03:28.400]Ja genau, that's exactly what ab implies.
[03:32.600]You can also see this in abgehen.
[03:35.560]To walk and cover every single spot, like when you have a clear route.
[03:41.080]Or abmessen.
[03:42.800]To measure precisely.
[03:45.040]Und abbilden bedeutet to copy or to map something.
[03:50.880]The focus is on the precision here too, covering every single aspect.
[03:56.040]This is the same for the noun abdruck, an imprint or a cast of something, for example
[04:01.600]your teeth.
[04:02.600]Druck alone is just a print.
[04:06.120]So this was our first advanced focus, short and intensive.
[04:10.760]Ich hoffe ihr versteht diese Vorsilbe jetzt besser.
[04:13.880]Let us know what you think of this lesson.
[04:17.040]Just go to GermanPod101.com and leave us a comment.

[04:24.520]I made a list of all words with the ab that came to my mind.
[04:28.800]Wow, danke Judith.
[04:31.000]That sounds really helpful.
[04:32.000]Nichts zu danken.
[04:34.000]Bis nächstes Mal.
[04:35.000]See you next time.
