[00:00.000]Hey, what's up everybody? I'm glad you're here. I'm Henrik. Welcome to a new episode of GermanPod101.com.
[00:06.000]Today our topic will be Mars. I will teach you must-know Mars words. And with Mars I don't mean the Mars planet, I mean Mars, the subject in school.
[00:16.000]Only that we Germans sometimes struggle with the th, so don't get confused here, alright? Let's get started.
[00:22.000]Mathematik, Mars. Mein Lieblingsfach in der Schule ist Mathematik. My favorite subject in school is Mars.
[00:52.000]Die Zahlen 11 und 17 sind beides Primzahlen.
[01:22.000]3. Einhalb, a half Ich trinke meinen Tee mit eineinhalb Löffeln Zucker.
[01:42.000]Nummer 3. Einhalb, a half Ich trinke meinen Tee mit eineinhalb Löffeln Zucker.
[02:13.000]Nummer 4. Prozent, percent 50% von 12 sind 6.
[02:20.000]Nummer 6. 50% von 12 sind 6. Mathematik korrekt, Deutsch korrekt, Englisch korrekt. Easy sentence for you guys, right?
[02:39.000]Nummer 5. Grade, even Die Zahl 8 ist ein Beispiel für eine gerade Zahl.
[02:51.000]Nummer 6. Ungerade, odd Die Nummer 11 ist ein Beispiel für eine ungerade Zahl.
[02:58.000]Die Nummer 11 ist ein Beispiel für ein uneven number.
[03:02.000]Even numbers, now we have odd numbers. In German it's a little bit easier, it's just grade.
[03:08.000]Und ungerade.
[03:10.000]Nummer 6. Ungerade, odd Die Nummer 11 ist ein Beispiel für eine ungerade Zahl.
[03:17.000]In German it's a little bit easier, it's just grade.
[03:19.000]Und ungerade.
[03:21.000]So in many things, if it's the opposite in German, you just put un in front of it.
[03:25.000]For example, if you measure something really exactly, you say genau.
[03:30.000]And if it's really incredibly unspecific, not exactly at all, it's ungenau.
[03:35.000]So just put un in front of the word, making the meaning the opposite.
[03:39.000]Like deny the actual meaning.
[03:41.000]So grade, even, ungerade, uneven or in terms of numbers odd.
[03:47.000]German logic and words is good.
[03:49.000]Nummer 7. Berechnen, to calculate Können Sie die Kosten für die Lebensmittel berechnen?
[03:56.000]Can you calculate the cost of the groceries?
[03:58.000]Yeah, my grocery costs are not too big, my fridge is always empty.
[04:02.000]There's not too much to calculate about it.
[04:04.000]I could maybe eat a little more, then I would also have to calculate more costs for my groceries.
[04:09.000]Nummer 8.
[04:11.000]Plus, plus Eins plus Eins ist zwei.
[04:16.000]One plus one makes two.
[04:18.000]Super easy one, just like plus is almost plus.
[04:24.000]You probably will not get too much confusion with this word.
[04:27.000]Calculating in German is probably as simple as it is in English for you guys.
[04:32.000]Number 9.
[04:33.000]Probably you guessed it already.
[04:35.000]Minus, minus 8 minus 1 ist 7.
[04:40.000]8 minus 1 is 7.
[04:43.000]Is that too simple for you guys?
[04:45.000]So let's put 8 minus 5.
[04:49.000]That's harder.
[04:50.000]8 minus 5 is 3.
[04:53.000]8 minus 5 is 3.
[04:56.000]Yeah, you can go on.
[04:57.000]I mean, I'm probably not the right one to teach you plus and minus.
[05:01.000]I'm here to teach you the words.
[05:03.000]And you see minus, minus, almost as simple as plus and plus.
[05:08.000]Calculating in German, you got it.
[05:11.000]Number 10.
[05:12.000]Nummer 10.
[05:13.000]Mal times.
[05:15.000]3 mal 3 ist 9.
[05:18.000]3 times 3 is 9.
[05:21.000]Yeah, there is this...
[05:22.000]Do you know Pippi Longstock?
[05:24.000]This cartoon, but child story character.
[05:28.000]And there's a song.
[05:29.000]I don't even know how it is in English, but in German I think.
[05:32.000]3 mal 3 macht 9.
[05:35.000]Going on.
[05:36.000]So it's like 3 times 3 makes 9.
[05:41.000]That's probably the easiest way to remember what is 3 times 3 in case you're not so good with numbers.
[05:47.000]A math rule is in German Punkt vor Strich.
[05:51.000]It's points before stripes.
[05:55.000]Like plus and minus.
[05:56.000]It's kind of like stripes.
[05:58.000]Whereas mal and geteilt are dots.
[06:02.000]Calculating.
[06:03.000]If you have a chain of numbers, you always first calculate the dots.
[06:07.000]The times divided by.
[06:10.000]Before you calculate plus and minus.
[06:12.000]Why I'm telling you this, just to show we do it the other way.
[06:15.000]We have plus and minus.
[06:16.000]Now we have mal.
[06:17.000]That's already it for our lesson today.
[06:19.000]If you have any more questions about German or about math, I might be helpful or not.
[06:24.000]Well, depending on how much you believe in my math knowledge after this lesson.
[06:30.000]I hope to see you again.
[06:31.000]I had fun.
[06:32.000]Bye bye.
[06:33.000]Auf Wiedersehen.
